Tucked at the end of this evenings National Signing Day event at The Rent, head coach Bob Diaco announced the hiring of new wide receivers coach Erik Campbell. The announcement should turn a number of heads.
According to the job description posted for the position, the Huskies staff was looking for a coach who ‘had a proven record of developing receivers into NFL talent.’
At Michigan, Campbell’s track record certainly meets the requirements as he helped develop Tai Streets, Amani Toomer, Braylon Edwards, David Terrell, Jason Avant, Mario Manningham and Steve Breaston. In total, twelve (12) UM receivers went on to see time in the NFL during his time with the Wolverines (1995-2007).
A statistic that current UConn WR Noel Thomas will enjoy, under Campbell, Michigan had eight consecutive seasons with a 1,000 yard receiver (1998-2005).
In addition to his WR duties at Michigan, Campbell was the assistant head coach to Lloyd Carr from 2003-07. Following his time with UM, he moved on to Iowa, again coaching receivers under Kirk Ferentz from 2008-12.
Campbell also played for the Wolverines (1984-87), alongside current Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh and new athletic director Warde Manuel. Harbaugh brought Campbell back home a year ago, naming him to the role of Football Operations Assistant, but he also played an integral role in Michigan’s recruiting efforts.
Campbell, who will have a talented group of receivers to work with at UConn, has also coached at Navy, Ball State, Syracuse and in the CFL.
