AAC CONFERENCE CALL: HC Randy Edsall Recaps 56-49 Win Over URI & Previews Syracuse (Week 4)

OPENING STATEMENT:

“It was a good win for our players, I was very happy we were able to get a win for them. I thought we competed extremely hard for 60-minutes. Defensively we made a stop at the end. Offensively we did a great job in the first half, scored a touchdown on all six possessions. We had some mistakes in the second half where we turned the ball over, but all-in-all it was just a good team victory for us. Hopefully that gives us a little more confidence as we continue to go forward. Of course, we are going up to Syracuse this weekend to play in the Carrier Dome, which is always a tough venue to play in. They are off to a 3-0 start, coming off a win over Florida State. We are going to have our hands full, but we are going to continue to work and keep getting better each and every week.”

IN THE PAST, YOU’VE TALKED ABOUT GETTING A TEAM TO START WINNING IS GETTING THEM ACQUANTED WITH HOW TO WIN. AFTER SATURDAY, DO YOU FEEL THE EXPERIENCE IN GETTING A WIN WILL GO THROUGH TO UPCOMING GAMES?:

“I think everything is a process. You learn how to win by doing it everyday in practice. You need to prepare the right way and continue to get bigger and stronger. With the youth that we have, the only way we are going to get better and have the understanding of how to win is by playing and getting that experience. I just think it’s one of those things that you need to build on and say, yes, we won, but here’s what we need to do better because we aren’t anywhere where we need to be. We need to watch more film, do more to continue to get better. That’s the whole thing that we’re going through is that process of teaching these kids how to win. You don’t learn how to win after you win just one game. It’s one of those things that is all the hard work that goes into it, you earn the right to win. That’s what we need to do. With all these young kids, it might take us a little more time than what people might expect, but the only way these guys are going to get better, especially defensively, is to continue to play. Then they get the experience, they develop the confidence, they get stronger and then you put yourself in a position where you know you can work to win every game.”

YOU’VE TALKED ABOUT THE MATURITY & DEVELOPING PLAYERS, WHEN YOU SEE QB DAVID PINDELL REALLY DEVELOP IN FRONT OF OUR EYES, WHAT CAN YOU SAY ABOUT YOUR SENIOR QUARTERBACK?:

“I think he’s just done a great job. It gets back to his work ethic. David wants to be good. That’s where it all starts with any person. You need to want to be good and then are you willing to invest and spend the time that it takes to be good? He’s done that. He’s very coachable, listens to what [OC] John [Dunn] tells him. The Good Lord has blessed him with outstanding skills. He’s athletic, can throw the ball, but it comes down to him wanting to be good and then taking the time, putting in the time to be good.”

LOOKING AT THE QB SITUATION IN SYRACUSE; ERIC DUNGEY WENT OUT OF THE GAME, TOMMY DEVITO STEPPED IN, WHAT HAVE YOU SEEN ON FILM IN PREPARATION FOR EITHER GUY ON SATURDAY?:

“I think they are both very good quarterbacks. They were both very productive in the games that they’ve played. We need to be ready to face whoever comes out there. They both can run and both can throw the ball.”

FOR YOU, GOING BACK TO SYRACUSE, WHAT CAN YOU SAY ABOUT THIS YEAR’S TEAM & WHAT DINO BABERS IS DOING IN HIS THIRD SEASON & YOUR MAIN TAKEAWAYS OFFENSIVELY & DEFENSIVELY?:

“I think the bottom line is it’s very simple. They are 3-0, they are undefeated and they are playing well.”
